Coach Mikey’s Essential HYROX Training Tips for Men
Fuelling - carbs, carbs and more carbs. Top up the glycogen levels to prevent fatigue and cramping. Gel 15-30 mins pre race and mid race. If you cramp then you're done.
Warm up - 15-30 mins. Mobility work, light run, bike. Explosive work on stations short 10-30 secs max to get everything firing
Don't go out too hot - I was a sucker for this last race. You feel great on that first run and it's very easy to get sucked in around the athletes with you. Run at a smooth and comfortable pace, your body will thank you later
Run your own race - as much as you are there to compete/race. You simple don't know other people's fitness levels. Stick to what you know pre race and go at your own pace.
Wall balls - this makes or breaks a lot of people. Mentally thinking you got to do a 100 wall balls at an end of a race can crush many. Break it down into can I do 10. Then do 10 then another 10.
Focus more on running - Hyrox is a running race, with added stations. Most people just simple don't run enough. Spend less time doing the Hyrox workouts and start doing more running.
Don't neglect strength training - stations such as sled push & pull, lunges rather a great deal of leg strength. Focus leg day more on low reps, power output, being explosive. This is going to transfer over to your Hyrox. Now is not the time for hypertrophy training.
Hard days and easy days - people fall into this trap where nearly everyday becomes a hard day. This will lead to burnout or even injury. Push on the hard days, easy on the easy days. Easy day example can be a zone 2 run/ bike with mobility work.
Stop trying to train like the pros - know how much time and sessions you can do throughout the week. Trying to do what the pros are doing whilst working a full time job is not going to work. Not always more is better. Have a schedule and stick to it.
- Don't compare - this is something we all do including myself. Especially if you're a newbie in the sport even like myself. The only person you should be comparing yourself to is the person you were yesterday.
